Beschrijving

Balla and the Forest of Legends is the first volume in The Chronicles of Ubuntopia series.

In the book Balla, the Griot, tells two stories from Africa that are hundreds and hundreds of years old in a modern and at the same time magical way. Stories about love, friendship, cleverness and leadership.

Balla and the Forest of Legends is written for all children who love beautiful stories, and especially for children who have a special connection with Africa. What makes it unique are the beautiful drawings, and the combination of comics, an overarching storyline and background information. While the legends are discussed in the overarching storyline, in WikiTopia you will find background information that will make them come even more alive. That is why this book is perfect for anyone who wants to read more about Africa; maybe because you have vacationed there, or you are curious about places that you are yet to discover. Or, perhaps because you want to know more about your culture or that of your (grand) parents or friends.

Books like this are rare. When books about Africa appear, they are usually about poverty, aid and conflict, and almost never about wealth, civilization and power. Moreover, they are certainly never about what Western countries can learn from Africa.

Comic 1: Rain Queen Numbi and the White Lions
A long time ago in Southern Africa, there was an empire ruled by a woman, Queen Numbi. A falling star provides a cure for her illness. At the same time the tawny lions get magical white cubs. What is going on? It is an adventurous story about female leadership and the story is a symbolic reminder about the importance of protecting our environment.

Comic 2: Fumo Liyongo and the Dance of the Drums
This story is about Liyongo from Kenya, a mythological tribal chief, warrior and poet. He was incredibly strong and tall. He looked like a giant. One day, when he was imprisoned, he was escaped by singing and playing the drums. What was his special trick?
It is an epic story about adapting to new circumstances, about cleverness and love.

Small story: Anansi and the Large Guard
Anansi was a greedy spider. One day, he devised what he thought would be the best way to be powerful. “Ma Akuba,” he said to his wife, “I am going on a journey. I’m going to collect all the wisdom of the world.”

In addition to the legends of the comic, there is a WikiTopia at the back of the book. Here you will find extra background information and fun facts about the legends.
